A Charitable Affiliate of the US BCSD

Charitable work that turns sustainability into stronger, more resilient communities.

The Foundation for Sustainable Development is the 501(c)(3) charitable affiliate of the US Business Council for Sustainable Development, which has brought business, government and communities together on practical sustainability projects since 1992.

The charitable home for US BCSD's community projects.

US BCSD is a 501(c)(6) business association and the U.S. Global Network partner of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. The Foundation lets that same network take on charitable and educational work, and accept the philanthropic grants that fund it.

The Foundation draws on US BCSD's staff, member companies and three decades of coalition building. It focuses on projects that deliver direct public benefit, especially in communities that have been left out of the clean-energy transition.

Four focus areas, built on US BCSD's strengths.

Building energy efficiency

Retrofits, solar and battery storage, plus the workforce training that puts local residents into those jobs.

Community resilience

Neighborhood hubs that provide power, shelter and services during emergencies and everyday support in between.

Carbon & working lands

Helping small and underserved landowners reach carbon markets and conservation programs.

Circular materials

Byproduct synergy that connects one organization's waste stream with another's raw-material needs.

CIRCLE Resilience Hubs

Alongside Innovera, the Foundation is developing community resilience hubs in underserved San Francisco neighborhoods.

Each hub is planned for an underused or brownfield site, with priority on neighborhoods that have little access to fresh food. The hubs are meant to keep power, shelter and essential services running when emergencies hit, and to serve as a community resource every day in between.

  • Community-led from the start. A resident advisory board helps choose sites and shape each hub's services.

  • Local jobs. Workforce training in solar, battery storage and building energy efficiency.

  • Built with public partners. City and regional agencies are equal partners in planning and delivery.
