US BCSD Winter Meeting, February 12-13, 2008- San Antonio, TX

The US BCSD 2008 Winter Meeting began with a welcome and introduction by US BCSD Chairman Sabrina Watkins of ConocoPhillips.  Presentations were then given on Developing Project Opportunities: Charles Berry from BrownFlynn introduced the Amerita Mining Technology Project; Buddy Polovick from the US EPA addressed the US EPA’s SmartWay Transport Project; and David Carroll from Lafarge outlined WBCSD resource and project opportunities. Members and guests next broke out for the Project Working Groups Breakout Sessions. Session One included the Houston-Galveston Green Brownfield Project with a presentation on the status of the project and the Mobile BPS Project with a presentation outlining the BPS process. Session Two included the Great Lakes BPS Project with a presentation on the status of the project and the China BPS and Asia-Pacific Partnership. 

A Dinner Reception was held at Boudro’s Restaurant with Sabrina Watkins speaking on the Industry’s US climate change challenge and Myron Knudson, Senior Advisor to the Regional Administrator for US EPA Region 6, spoke on partnerships and meaningful project opportunities between the US EPA and the US BCSD.

The Sustainable Development Forum opened the meeting on the next morning with the introduction of the US BCSD’s newest members: Alan Lake for Owens Corning; James Backes for PEP Mobile; and Chuck Fowler for Fairmount Minerals.

The By-Product Synergy Focus Session began with Andy Mangan speaking on the current by-product synergy initiatives around the country and their current stages of development. Then Annie Brudno and Dennis Milligan, presented on the UK’s National Industrial Symbiosis Program’s Metrics methodology.

Updates on US BCSD Projects were given by Suzanne Giannini-Spohn for the China/EPA Partnership, Ron Sandberg for Green Brownfields, Craig Pedersen and Kristi Teykl for the Water Database Program, and Dennis Milligan for the Afforestation Project

The day ended with the Energy and Climate Session.  Jed Shilling from the Millennium Institute presented on Scenarios for USA Energy Outcomes with the Threshold 21 model; Bob Avant from Texas A&M University and Texas AgriLife Research addressed the Conversion of Traditional Crops and the Bioenergy situation; and Rich Chapas from Battelle presented on the SANGEA™ Energy and Emissions Estimation System.
 

US BCSD Summer Meeting, July 30-31, 2007- Chicago, IL

On July 31 at the Chicago Cultural Center, Sabrina Watkins of Conoco Phillips welcomed everyone as the new Chairman of the US BCSD. The keynote presentation for the meeting was next given by Sadhu Johnston, City of Chicago Environment Commissioner, who discussed Chicago’s environmental initiatives.

To highlight the success of the Chicago Waste to Profit Network, David O’Donnell from the City of Chicago, Kan Wan of Chicago Manufacturing Center, Philip Gordon of Engineered Glass Projects, Jim McBride of Schulze and Burch Biscuit Co., Ed de Lara from Abbot Labs, and Eileen Joyce from the City of City each presented an update on the status of the project within their company.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Stephen L. Johnson then arrived to sign the MOU with the US BCSD Chairman Sabrina Watkins and to honor Dr. Gordon Forward with the President's Volunteer Service Award.

The US BCSD is currently involved with several by-product synergy initiatives around the country, all in various stages of development. Updates on the projects were given by Joseph Fiksel for Ohio BPS, Rick Chapas for Pacific Northwest BPS, Michael Donahue for SE Michigan BPS, Sarah Slaughter for Connecticut/Massachusetts BPS, and Andy Mangan for Gulf Coast and San Francisco Bay BPS.

To highlight the Ecosystems Services Platform, David Carroll of LaFarge NA presented on the WBCSD Ecosystems Focus Area and Ron Sandberg of Conservation Capital gave the status of the Green Brownfields project in Houston.

Sabrina Watkins then gave an update for the Water Platform of efforts within the WBCSD Water Working Group to develop the Global Water Tool.
Topics concerning the Energy and Climate Platform were next presented by Dave Hewitt for New Building Institute, Stephen McComb for the Chicago Climate Exchange, and Greg Bergtold from Dow Chemical Company for the Green Building Initiative.

The Energy and Climate Ideation Session led by Sabrina was the last session of the day. The interactive session engaged all of the members and guests to focus on ideas for energy and climate change projects in specific areas of the US.
